Issunboshi: The One-Inch Boy

In a small village, an elderly couple longed for a child. After many years of praying to the gods, their wish was granted, and the woman gave birth to a tiny boy, no larger than a fingertip. The couple named him "Issunboshi," meaning "One-Inch Boy." Though small in size, he was healthy and strong, and they took great care of him as he grew.

Issunboshi's Journey to the Capital

As Issunboshi grew older, he decided to leave the village and make his own way in the world. One day, he told his parents, "I’m going to the capital to find my fortune." His parents, though worried, helped him prepare for the journey. They made him a small boat out of a rice bowl, used chopsticks as oars, and gave him a needle as a sword. With these simple tools, Issunboshi set sail toward the capital.

Issunboshi's Heroic Deed and Transformation

Upon reaching the capital, Issunboshi sought work with a noble family. He was welcomed into their home as a servant, and soon, he was entrusted with escorting their daughter to a temple. On their journey, an ogre appeared and tried to kidnap the young woman.

Though tiny, Issunboshi bravely fought the ogre, but the creature swallowed him whole. Inside the ogre’s stomach, Issunboshi used his needle to pierce the creature’s insides, causing it great pain. The ogre spat him out in distress and fled.

As a reward for his bravery, the young woman thanked Issunboshi and gave him a magical club called Uchide no Kozuchi, which could grant any wish. Issunboshi wished for his body to grow taller and stronger. Miraculously, he began to grow, and soon he was a strong and mighty man.

A Prosperous Life and a Happy Ending

With his newfound size and strength, Issunboshi quickly became wealthy by discovering hidden treasures. He married the noblewoman, and together they lived a happy and prosperous life.
