The Brave Little Tailor

Once upon a time, in a small village, there lived a young, clever, and ambitious tailor. One sunny morning, he sat by the window, sewing quietly, enjoying the warmth of summer. A passing farmer woman was selling apple jam in the street, calling out to passersby. Curious, the tailor called to her, asking to see her jars. After carefully inspecting and even smelling the jam, he asked for a generous portion, joking that she could weigh it slightly over. The woman, slightly annoyed, handed it over and muttered under her breath, thinking she had found a tricky customer.
The Brave Little Tailor
As the tailor prepared his meal with a slice of bread and the jam, a group of flies descended, attracted by the sweet scent. Frustrated, he grabbed a piece of leather and swatted them fiercely, killing seven at once. Proud of this unexpected victory, he crafted a belt and embroidered in bold letters: “Seven at one blow.” Feeling excited and adventurous, he decided that staying in his small shop would be a waste of his newfound courage. He packed some cheese and even rescued a trapped bird, placing it carefully in his bag as he set off on his journey across the land.

Soon, he reached a mountain and encountered a giant sitting casually at the peak, surveying the world below. Boldly, the tailor greeted the giant and asked if he would like to travel together. The giant laughed at the small man, calling him weak and insignificant. The tailor cleverly proved his strength by squeezing a piece of cheese to show it could be as tough as the giant’s stone, then tossed the bird into the air as if it were a mighty feat. The giant, astonished, invited him to try carrying a fallen oak tree. The tailor sat on a branch, letting the giant bear the weight of the entire tree and himself, all the while whistling cheerfully, making the giant exhausted. In a test of agility, the tailor leaped from a bent cherry tree branch, escaping the giant’s reach while the giant struggled to jump as high, failing each time. Impressed by the tailor’s bravery, the giant invited him to spend the night in the giant’s cave. The tiny tailor slept safely in the corner of the enormous bed, undisturbed despite the giant’s attempts to frighten him with a heavy iron rod.

The tailor continued his journey, eventually arriving at the royal garden, where he fell asleep on the grass. Passersby noticed the bold inscription on his belt and spread word to the king that a mighty warrior capable of defeating seven men at once had appeared. The king summoned the tailor to the palace and explained that the kingdom was troubled by two dangerous giants who robbed, killed, and terrorized the land. The king promised his daughter’s hand and half the kingdom if the tailor could defeat them. Confident, the tailor insisted he needed no help from the king’s soldiers and would handle the task himself.

Deep in the forest, the tailor faced the two giants while the king’s hundred knights waited outside. Using his wits, he threw stones from a tree onto the sleeping giants, provoking them to fight each other in confusion. Eventually, they tore up trees in anger and killed each other, leaving the clever tailor unharmed. The knights were astonished to find the giants dead, confirming the tailor’s reputation as a true hero.

The king, reluctant to honor his promise, assigned two more challenges: capturing a troublesome unicorn and a wild boar. Each time, the tailor relied on his intelligence and quick reflexes rather than brute force. He cleverly trapped the unicorn against a tree and restrained the wild boar inside a church by blocking the window. Witnessing these feats, the king had no choice but to fulfill his promise. The tailor married the princess and received half the kingdom, becoming a ruler respected by all.

Later, when the queen attempted to trick him into being kidnapped, the tailor overheard her plan and pretended to be asleep, speaking loudly as if he were aware of everything, scaring the would-be kidnappers into fleeing. From that day forward, the brave little tailor ruled wisely and safely, known for his courage, intelligence, and ingenuity.

This classic tale teaches that true bravery does not rely on size or strength alone. Intelligence, resourcefulness, and courage can achieve extraordinary victories, even against seemingly insurmountable challenges.
