A Cat Is Always a Cat

This humorous Vietnamese folktale tells the story of a man who tries to give his clever cat grand names, only to discover that its true nature never changes. The tale highlights the humor in human pride, the simplicity of logical thinking, and the truth that no matter what label we assign, a thing remains what it truly is.

Once upon a time, there was a man who owned a cat. He believed his cat was the wisest, cleverest, and most extraordinary creature anyone could imagine. Thinking that a simple name like “Cat” would not do justice, he decided to give it a grand name and called it “Sky.”
A Cat Is Always a Cat
One day, a curious visitor came to see him and noticed the unusual name. He asked, “Why do you call your cat ‘Sky’?” The owner replied confidently, “My cat is unique and unmatched. Calling it just a cat would not honor its greatness. Nothing can surpass the sky, so the name fits perfectly.”

The visitor, smiling, said, “But clouds can cover the sky.” Without hesitation, the owner responded, “Then I shall call it ‘Cloud.’” The visitor shook his head, “But the wind can blow away clouds.” The man quickly answered, “Then it shall be ‘Wind.’”

“But walls can stop the wind,” the visitor argued. “Then I shall call it ‘Wall,’” the owner said. “But mice can gnaw through walls,” the visitor continued. “Then I shall call it ‘Mouse,’” said the owner. The visitor laughed, “But cats catch mice!” The man paused, thought for a moment, and finally smiled. “Then I will simply call it ‘Cat,’ just as I did at the beginning.”

The visitor laughed and clapped his hands, saying, “So it is true what the proverb says: a cat remains a cat, no matter what you call it.”
