Long ago, when animals could speak and live together like humans, Hare was known for being quick, clever, and full of curiosity. He was also very competitive. Hare always wanted to prove that he was braver and more skillful than the other animals, especially during games or challenges that tested courage.
One day, the animals gathered to play a dangerous game meant to show who was truly fearless. The challenge involved standing very close to a burning fire and facing the heat without stepping back. The one who endured the longest would be praised as the bravest of all.
Many animals hesitated. They understood how powerful and unpredictable fire could be. But Hare, driven by pride and a desire to stand out, stepped forward immediately. He did not want anyone to think he was weak, and he trusted his speed and agility to protect him from harm.
When the game began, Hare moved closer and closer to the flames. At first, everything seemed fine. Encouraged by the attention, he leaned in even more to prove his courage. In a moment of carelessness, the fire flared up suddenly, sending intense heat straight toward his face. Startled, Hare jumped back, but it was too late. The heat burned his nose deeply, splitting it down the middle.
The other animals rushed to help him. Hare was in great pain and deeply ashamed. He realized that his need to win and his refusal to think carefully had caused his injury. Although the animals cared for him, the wound never healed completely.
From that day on, Hare’s nose was permanently split. Every breath he took served as a reminder of the moment when curiosity and competitiveness pushed him to ignore danger.
According to Southern African folklore, this is why the hare has a slit nose today. The story teaches that curiosity and the desire to prove oneself can lead to serious consequences if they are not guided by caution and wisdom. Not every challenge needs to be faced, and true intelligence lies in knowing when to step back rather than rush forward.
