The Washerman and His Donkey

Long ago in a quiet Indian village, a humble washerman made a living cleaning clothes for the villagers. He owned a donkey that helped him carry heavy loads. Although the donkey worked hard every day, he never seemed satisfied. He often wandered off in search of food and freedom.

One day, the washerman found a tiger’s skin abandoned in the forest. An idea flashed in his mind. He thought, “If I cover my donkey with this skin, people will think he’s a real tiger. They’ll be too afraid to stop him from grazing in the fields. I won’t have to worry about feeding him anymore!”

Excited by his clever plan, the washerman wrapped the tiger skin around his donkey and led him into a nearby field.

The Donkey Becomes a “Tiger”

With his new disguise, the donkey looked terrifying. From a distance, the villagers truly believed a tiger had entered the area. Out of fear, they abandoned the fields and fled. The donkey, thrilled by the sudden freedom and abundance of food, munched on fresh crops and vegetables without any interruption.

Each day, the washerman took the disguised donkey to different fields, and every time, the results were the same — villagers ran away, and the donkey ate to his heart’s content.

The Mistake That Changed Everything

Days passed, and the donkey grew bolder. He began to believe he really was special — even powerful. One moonlit night, while grazing in a lush field, he heard the distant braying of another donkey.

Something inside him stirred. He couldn’t resist. In a moment of excitement, he opened his mouth and let out a loud, unmistakable “Hee-haw!”
The sound echoed through the night.

The nearby villagers, already suspicious of the frequent tiger sightings, immediately realized the truth. “That’s not a tiger! That’s a donkey in disguise!” they shouted. Angry at being fooled and furious over their ruined crops, they rushed toward the donkey with sticks and stones.

Terrified and confused, the donkey tried to run, but he was soon caught. The washerman’s plan had backfired, and the donkey paid the price for his foolish pride.
